Motocross originated as a motorcycle trial competition in the United Kingdom in 1909 as the Auto-Club first quarterly trial. Post this, it became a popular international sporting event and motocross racing was thus born. The first racing event with its new avatar was held at Camberley, Surrey in 1924. This amazing sport underwent many transformations to gain its current form. Strict rules were created; there were revolutionary modifications and changes done to the bikes.  These changes and popularity led to the formation of its international governing body and world championship events were then introduced. Countries like France, Spain, Italy, Austria, and Japan have gone a long way to develop their own technology for these special bikes due to an increased demand for its spare parts. Dirt bikes are the primary type of bikes used for this thrilling sport.

Motocross tracks consist of specially designed turns and ramps to increase the level of difficulty. Each event holds around 25 – 30 riders with special skills. There is a fixed number of lapses in each race, and the rider who is the first to cross the finish line becomes the winner. Heat format is the rule of the thumb for the championship events. The riders who finish on the top automatically qualify for the next round.  The final race is held amongst the final group of qualifiers.

Major Competitions And Events

Motocross has several major competitions with the World Championship being the biggest. It is an annual affair with separate events for women and men. The races are divided among four major classifications of bikes. Currently, this exciting and thrilling sports activity holds four major competitions globally.

  • FIM World Championship is a major European event. But apart from Europe, there are other countries like Africa, Australia, Asia, South America, and North America which also hold this event.
  • AMA Championship begins mid-may and continues until late August and is held on 12 major tracks across the United States.
  • Motocross Des Nations is an annual event held across Great Britain, Belgium, and the United States. The venues keep changing regularly.
  • British Championship is the major off-road event of the United Kingdom

These four major events around the globe attract millions of spectators who travel miles to witness some of the most breath-taking moments of this extreme sport.
